FUE Graft Forceps for Cross-Serrated Epidermal Collar Capture During Follicular Unit Extraction

Adson Extracting Forceps Serrated is a tissue forceps and graft-handling forceps of the Adson pattern, manufactured by BusinessMed Instruments®, for use in Hair Transplant Surgery (FUE / FUT), Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and Dermatology (Dermatologic Surgery).

Adson Extracting Forceps Serrated grasps the follicular unit — a naturally occurring bundle of 1–4 terminal hairs with associated sebaceous glands, arrector pili muscle, and perifollicular connective tissue — at the epidermal collar of the occipital donor scalp, and seats the follicular unit graft into the recipient site slit in alopecic scalp dermis across the FUE graft extraction phase, FUE graft implantation phase, and FUT graft implantation phase.

Cross-Serrated Jaw Capture and Epidermal Collar Grip

Fine flat platform tips carry transverse horizontal serrations across the full platform tip width. These cross-serrations orient perpendicular to the instrument axis, creating a distributed resistance plane that holds the follicular unit epidermal collar against lateral displacement without requiring increased digital closure force. Spring-action thumb forceps returns the jaws to the open position on release of digital pressure, completing one capture-and-release cycle for repetitive single-handed graft handling across high-volume FUE and FUT sessions. Where surgeons use high-graft-count sessions — 2,000 or more follicular units — the cross-serrated tip reduces the grip adjustment frequency that smooth-surface tips can require when graft tissue is moist.

Perifollicular Dermal Tissue Response and Graft Viability

The published acceptable clinical threshold for FUE is ≤5% graft transection rate. Graft transection results when forceps grip contacts the hair follicle bulb — the dermal papilla — or when traction is applied before punch release of subcutaneous follicular attachments; the transected graft is non-viable, reduces total yield, and produces failed post-implantation growth. Fine flat platform tips distribute gripping force across the follicular unit graft surface, reducing focal dermal pressure relative to toothed configurations. The surgeon confirms follicular unit intactness for transplant suitability and selects recipient slit by graft caliber: single-hair units to the hairline zone, multi-hair units to the mid-scalp or crown.

Clinical Uses and Applications

  • The follicular unit epidermal collar is engaged at the occipital donor scalp during the FUE graft extraction phase after punch scoring of perifollicular dermis and subcutaneous follicular attachments.
  • Follicular unit grafts are seated into recipient site slits in alopecic scalp dermis during the FUE graft implantation phase in anterior-to-posterior sequence.
  • Strip-harvested follicular unit grafts are placed into recipient site slits during the FUT graft implantation phase — single-hair units to the hairline zone, multi-hair units to the mid-scalp and crown.
  • Graft caliber is assessed during slit selection; cross-serrated tip grip holds the epidermal collar without applying compression at hair follicle bulb depth, keeping transection rate within the ≤5% clinical threshold.
  • The follicular unit is delivered into the pre-made recipient site slit at correct angle and depth to prevent graft burial and popping of adjacent units.
  • Follicular unit grafts are handled and sorted during the FUT strip harvesting preparation phase to maintain viability before implantation.
  • Hair restoration procedures in Dermatologic Surgery use this forceps to place follicular unit grafts into recipient site slits at the alopecic scalp dermis.
